Material - Sodium Chloride (NaCl)




Sodium Chloride NaCl is used for manufacturing of windows, lenses and prisms which are transparent in the spectral range (0.21 - 17) micron. Because of low absorption, Sodium Chloride is being used in high power laser systems. Sodium Chloride is being grown by the Kyropoulos method. NaCl crystals are being cleaved easily. With care NaCl material can be polished to a high standard under humidity controlled conditions. Polished surfaces must be protected from moisture by exposing them to only dry atmosphere or by using a heating element to keep the surfaces above ambient temperature. Sodium Chloride NaCl can be used at temperatures up to 400 degrees C. The material is sensitive to thermal shock. Irradiation of NaCl generates color centers.
